Between the Dream and the Screen: Welcome to Ringmaster Media
“Dreams make good stories, but everything important happens while we’re awake.” Dune (2021)
Stories often begin with dreams.
Sometimes it’s an image. A character. A place. A conversation. A question that refuses to go away. Sometimes it’s an idea that appears almost fully formed. More often, it’s only the faintest outline of something that might become a story.
That’s where the fun begins.
An idea can arrive in a moment but getting it onto a screen is slower and messier: drafts change, collaborators challenge assumptions, practical limits reshape the plan, and the work continues until the story holds together.
That’s the idea behind Ringmaster Media.
Ringmaster began with a practical conviction: promising stories need more than enthusiasm. They need patient development, candid creative conversations, and people willing to solve the unglamorous problems between the first pitch and the finished work.
Welcome to Ringmaster Media
Ringmaster Media is a Chicago-based independent film and television production company that develops stories from their earliest ideas through production, with an emphasis on projects that reward close collaboration.
We work across film, television, documentary, and other forms of visual storytelling, but the medium isn’t where we begin.
We begin with the story.
We begin by asking what the story is truly about, who stands at its center, and what gives an audience a reason to stay with it. We also ask the harder practical question: is this a story worth the months or years it may take to bring to life?
Those questions can be deceptively difficult.
They’re also some of our favorite questions to ask.
The Work Between the Dream and the Screen
Some of the most important work in filmmaking happens long before anyone calls “Action.”
Development is where an interesting idea has to prove it can carry a story. Characters gain depth, structure starts to show itself, and hidden problems become impossible to ignore. Pages are written, rewritten, abandoned, recovered, and sometimes returned almost exactly to where they began.
It’s also where collaboration begins.
Filmmaking brings writers, directors, producers, performers, designers, technicians, and many other specialists into the same story. Each sees a different part of the work, and each can change what the finished project becomes.
The challenge is getting all of those elements moving in the same direction.
Which, come to think of it, has something to do with the name Ringmaster.
Why Ringmaster?
Film and television are wonderfully collaborative forms.
Even a modest production depends on many people making different creative and practical decisions. The work is recognizing how those decisions fit together, bringing the right collaborators into the process, and keeping sight of the story at the center of it all.
That is the spirit behind Ringmaster Media: not control for its own sake, but the practical work of helping the right people find one another, keeping the production aligned, and protecting the story as it changes.
So, What’s Next?
This blog will be one place where we share some of that journey.
Here, we’ll share projects in development and what they teach us about screenwriting, story development, independent production, adaptation, and emerging creative technologies.
We’ll talk about things that work.
We’ll probably talk about some things that don’t.
And, occasionally, we’ll simply talk about movies and television we love and why we love them. Ringmaster Media itself is still at the beginning of its story.
We have projects underway and stories we’re determined to tell.
Now comes the important part.
Time to get to work.
