Summary: Inevitable is a darkly comic sci-fi thriller about a marriage already approaching catastrophe when the rest of the world decides to join in.
Dawn and Steven Bradford are tearing each other apart over Leslie, a third person each suspects may be involved with the other. Their confrontation has already turned physical when an emergency broadcast reports mysterious lights in the sky, violent weather, and an order to seek immediate shelter.
Injured and furious, the couple retreats to an old bomb shelter beneath their home, where they make a startling discovery: photographs, letters, and newspapers suggest the shelter once belonged to Robert and Kitty Oppenheimer. Among the artifacts are traces of Oppenheimer’s relationship with Jean Tatlock, creating an uncomfortable historical echo of the jealousy and betrayal threatening Dawn and Steven’s own marriage.
As explosions shake the shelter and the world outside grows increasingly unknowable, anger gradually gives way to memory, vulnerability, and the possibility of forgiveness. Facing what may be their final hours, Dawn and Steven begin to reconsider the relationship they were ready to destroy.
But whatever is happening outside may have its own opinion about their reconciliation.
Blending relationship drama, apocalyptic science fiction, historical irony, and pitch-black humor, Inevitable asks whether love can survive betrayal, catastrophe, and the inconvenient possibility that the universe has simply had enough.
